Jesus found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." John 1: 43
I found out yesterday after a period of uncertainty about how long it would take me to find a job that I have two job interviews coming up. Obviously two interviews does not equate to having a job, but I am already feeling more secure and certain that things will be ok.
In the past weeks I have been feeling a bit down and very unsure about a few things and have been seeking God in the midst of it all. While this time hasn't been too easy, it has been kind of exciting to feel my need for God that much and to genuinely want to replace some of my "idols" with a deeper relationship with Christ. I have possibly never been so keen!
Then I was offered a sort-of-security on a platter and found myself immediately feeling drawn to that (even though it is hardly a certainty) rather than the eternal and all-consuming security of life lived in reliance on God.
So I now come to a crossroads which I have stood at many a time - do I follow the immediate but incomplete and transient satisfaction of finding my stability in my job, money, relationships etc, or do I choose to follow Jesus and learn to know myself to be safe and secure in him? (Don't worry, I don't think that following Jesus means becoming a nun or a hermit, it is just about what I rely on.) I have always, in the end, chosen to make work, money or relationships more important than Christ in my life. Christ has usually been allowed a percentage of my trust and dependence, but I'm not sure it has ever remained at above 50% for long.
Jesus says, "Follow me."
I say, "I'm going to need a hell of a lot of help."
