Lent 3: The restless heart

Jesus said to them, "What are you looking for?"  John 1: 38

What am I looking for?

I begin to answer, "A job, stability, and to know what my life will look like soon...."

What am I really looking for?

I am reminded of Augustine's famous prayer, "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you."

A restless heart is something I know all too well.  Yet again today I sit and try to pray and my mind is all over the place, trying to find an answer to my uncertain life situation.  Usually when this happens I decide that this is God's fault - if God were truly there and interested in me, it would be easy to focus.

I now believe that I am just horribly out of practice.  God does not force anything, let alone my attention.  I am not used to sitting attentively in the presence of God, and so find it difficult.

This Lent I shall practice, stubbornly and hopefully, believing this to be the way to true rest for my restless heart.
